Field note

The beauty content brief: facts, claims and creative freedom

A beauty content brief needs two connected documents: the creative direction and an approved product facts sheet. Keeping them distinct makes the image more expressive while giving writers, creators and editors a consistent factual reference.

Editorial approach

Build one approved product record

Record the product name, variants, size, ingredients or materials, directions, availability and the exact statements approved for publication. Link each performance statement to its supporting material and name the person responsible for approval. The brief should distinguish a sensory description from a measured result. “A lightweight texture” and a timed or quantified outcome are not interchangeable. When a statement changes, every publishing team needs the revised version.

Turn the idea into a shot decision

Art direction should describe the feeling, casting, styling, light and composition in concrete terms. Then explain what each asset must show. A complexion image may need a readable finish; an application film may need the product and hand movement to stay visible. Atmosphere can carry a campaign, while a commerce asset may need to answer a specific buying question. Assign those jobs before asking one beautiful image to do all of them.

Plan variants before production

Create a delivery matrix with destination, aspect ratio, length, language, copy space, product information and approval owner. Shopify supports multiple kinds of product media, including images and video; which formats belong in the assignment depends on the store and the product. Test a sample asset in the actual mobile template before committing the full shoot. A crop that hides the useful detail is a production problem worth finding early.

Set boundaries for generated and retouched imagery

Decide whether an asset is expressive brand imagery or evidence about a real product. Generated people and settings can serve a creative concept, but they should not become an invented testimonial, client campaign or demonstration of a result. Keep internal provenance, source permissions and editing notes with the delivery. For real product representation, verify colour, packaging, proportions and performance details against approved references before publication.

Make the handover usable

Deliver a named master, approved derivatives and a current facts sheet together. Record rights, release dates, expiration dates and where the files may appear. Archive superseded versions so an old claim does not return through a scheduled post. SOCELLE’s content scope can connect this production brief to the channel plan, giving the next editor a clear reason for each asset and a reliable path to approval.

The working checklist

  • One facts sheet with an approval owner
  • A distinct purpose for each image or film
  • Channel-specific crops and versions
  • Rights, provenance and expiry records
  • A controlled handover of approved files
